Sync Contacts and Calendar between Nokia E71 and Google

A few weeks back I switched back from Exchange Hosted email to Google Hosted Email. I had no issues with Exchange hosted email. It worked perfectly but I was so used to the Gmail UI that I wanted that for my domain email too.

The key benefits of using Exchange was that I had my contacts and calender always in-sync. Never had to worry about it. So after making the switch I googled for a way to sync Google Contacts with my E71. There were quite a few options:

When I was trying out each of these services, Google released their own sync support. Unfortunately they supported Nokia E71 only using SyncML. The problem with SyncML is that it has to be manually synced. Well there is a solution that too: Swim. This lets you setup periodic SyncML sync.

One thing I never tried was to setup ActiveSync with Google’s sync service because they said it is not supported. To my surprise I found out that it indeed works with a limitation of syncing just one calendar. I can live with that.

So my current solution is Google’s own sync service via Activesync.
