Free QuickOffice update for E71
Quickoffice® Offers Free Updates for Select Nokia® Eseries DevicesLatest version of Quickoffice, office viewing and editing software suite, now available for download via on-device, e-commerce portal Quickmanager™
Dallas, TX – June 15, 2009 – Quickoffice, Inc., the leading global provider of mobile office productivity software, today announced it will be offering free upgrades to the latest version of Quickoffice for users on certain Nokia Eseries phones. Currently this program includes the Nokia E51, E52, E55, E63, E71, E72, E75 and E90 devices.
Starting today, users of the above devices can download Quickoffice 6 as a free upgrade via Quickmanager®, Quickoffice’s secure on-device, e-commerce portal. Quickoffice 6 includes more advanced document viewing and editing functionality of Microsoft Office 2007 documents, ZIP file support, password-protected file handling, Excel 2007 chart viewing and multiple usability enhancements. Subsequent software updates released by Quickoffice for these select devices will also be available on a continual basis, including PowerPoint 2007 format support. Quickoffice 6 will initially only be available in English and a fully localized update will follow in the near future.
Nice! Office 2007 Support… Though I have never used QuickOffice. Should try it out.
Nokia Email gets HTML Email support

Nokia Email finally gets HTML email support. In my earlier post I mentioned that HTML email is on the way, now it is here. It works well. There is an option to set it to display emails in HTML by default. You can switch to plain text on the fly too.

Finally a decent email client comes to S60. Plus now it supports Hotmail.
New Youtube App for Nokia E71

Google has released a new YouTube application for Symbian S60 devices like the Nokia E71. Go to http://www.youtube.com in the default browser in your phone to get the new app.
The application is snappy. Lets you search for videos, view the top rated, most viewed and most resent videos. The search results page has most information you need and has nice animation from moving from video to video.
When you select a video it zooms to full screen to play it. The video play back screen has controls for fast forward, rewind, pause and volume. It also shows the progress bar. Over all the experience is very good. Have fun…
6 Web Browsers for E71
I was just checking out a few web browsers on my E71. There are a total of 6 that I found! Wow!
- Built-in browser
- Opera Mini
- Skyfire
- Bolt
- Firefox – I don’t know where I installed this from. !?!
- TeaShark
Which do I use? Opera Mini for now. Are there any other browsers out there?
Which mobile blogging client to use?
My Nokia E71 with the excellent keyboard should be a good mobile blogging solution. I am looking for a good blogging client. I use Wordpress for my blog so I guess most clients should work with it. Here are a few I found:
MoPress – This is a J2ME based client. I could not find any screenshots on how it looks. I like good looking software. Thinking if I should even install this.
Wavelog – This is a commercial software. From the reviews looks like the one with the most features. Should I pay for a blogging client? Depends on how often I will be using this software. Maybe I will try a free one and upgrade to this if I mo-blog a lot.

Scribe – This is a free python based client. Does not seem to be updated recently. No blog for a blogging client. Hmm…

Wordmobi – This is also free and python based like Scribe. But seems to be more frequently updated. I think I will try this out.

Have I missed any other blogging clients? Let me know in the comments.

Orkut customized for Nokia E71 (S60)

Google has released a customized version of Orkut for Nokia E71 (all S60 devices infact). Nice AJAX’s stuff in it. Just goto http://m.orkut.com in your Native S60 browser. I hope they bring out customized versions of their other services like Gmai, Google Reader…
Why should the iPhone and Android alone get all the custom versions?
SmartConnect for Nokia E71
One complaints I had with my E71 is that it did not automatically connect to the best available connection. That is connect via WiFi when available or drop back to 3G when out of WiFi. I had to choose one or the other explicitly per application. Some of the Nokia phones with S60 FP2 seem to have this feature.
To remedy that Nokia has made available an app called SmartConnect via its download service for select E Series devices. Nokia E71 is one of them.
With SmartConnect you can setup a group of connections like WiFi and 3G. It will create a new access point with this group. Just use this access point and it will automatically select the best one available. Cool!
For phones that do not have this in the download list there is always the paid Psiloc Connect.
